10 Big Mistakes When Installing Canopies — Don't Make These!

10 Mistakes That Can Cost You Thousands of Ringgit

We've seen thousands of canopy projects — the good and the bad. Here are the 10 most common mistakes customers make (so you can avoid them).

1. Not Checking the Slope

This is mistake #1. A canopy without the right slope = pooling water. Pooling water = excess weight = damaged structure. Minimum slope is 5 degrees.

2. Choosing the Cheapest Contractor

"Cheap" always has a reason. Thin material, sloppy workmanship, no warranty. You pay RM500 less now, but spend RM3,000 on repairs later.

3. Material Not Suited to the Weather

Malaysia is hot and rainy. Material that holds up in the UK or Europe may not suit it here. Make sure the material is UV-resistant and can handle heavy rain.

4. Not Accounting for Expansion and Contraction

Metal expands when it's hot and contracts when it's cool. If there's no allowance for this movement, bolts can come loose and joints can crack.

5. Size Too Small

"Save budget, make it a bit smaller" — but after it's installed, it feels not enough. Better to plan slightly bigger than needed. The cost difference is small.

6. No Gutter / Rain Diverter

A canopy without a gutter = rainwater falling randomly. Beside the car, in front of the door, onto people walking by. A gutter is essential, not optional.

7. Not Checking the Permit

Some areas under DBKL, MBPJ, MBSA require a permit for large canopies. If you get fined, it costs even more than the canopy itself.

8. DIY Posts Without a Concrete Footing

Canopy posts MUST have a proper concrete footing. Just burying them in the soil without concrete = the canopy collapses in strong winds.

9. Ignoring Maintenance

"It's installed, done." But a canopy needs care too. Refer to our article on maintenance tips.

10. Not Taking Before and After Photos

This is for documentation in case of warranty issues. Plus, the "before" photos always make you appreciate your new canopy more!
